As an adult whose work-life centers around the Internet, it may be that I have an important perspective to share about children and computers. In my childhood, a computer was something to play video games on, a safe at-home pastime that didn’t require direct supervision from one of my parents. Then came the Internet. Over the past decade or so, a computer has become a home appliance that would appear to be as much of a no-brainer as a stove. Most families own at least one, or more than one computer these days. The Internet can be a wonderful educational tool, connecting you and your family with the learning, art and traditions of cultures around the globe. But, it is this very interconnectivity which makes the Internet an unsafe environment for the most vulnerable and precious members of our society – our children. Continue Reading »

Well, winter is fast approaching, which here in N. California means lots and lots of rain. Clouds are piled up like quilt batting on the mountain tops and the first green grasses are sprouting in the meadows. How I would loathe being stuck in an office environment during the winter time. I work much better during foul weather when I’m snuggly settled in my home office, a steaming cup of Irish Breakfast tea on hand, and my red Dearforms slippers on my feet.

Today was a day of doing dribs and drabs for various clients. A few new products here, a phone conversation with a PHP guy there, and yet in the midst of these run of the mill tasks, I had the kind of golden opportunity come up that makes my job such a treat for me. Continue Reading »
